Optimization and Decision Making

Optimization involves systematic methods of determining the best decisions for a decision problem. Developing mathematical formulations of meaningful performance criteria and constraints for the problem under consideration forms the basis of optimization. While determining the decisions, an objective function related to the optimality criterion is minimized or maximized by considering the existing constraints.

Optimization techniques are widely used in airport revenue management, routes in the transportation sector, investment portfolios in the finance sector, operating room schedules and radiotherapy treatment plans according to patient priorities in the health sector, and inventory levels and work schedules in the production sector.

Sabancı University conducts studies on this subject in both Computer Science and Engineering and Industrial Engineering programs.
